The over indulgence attitude of humans is causing massive destruction to the environment and atmosphere around us. So much so that the individuals are forced to carry oxygen cylinder. The animals are parched and without natural shelter i.e. trees. The monkeys we see around have not migrated into our territory but it is we who have wrongly trespassed into theirs. The scorching heat in norther India, the heaps of garbage in neighbourhood are all concerning issues which needs to be dealt immediately, not by speeches but by action.
Lodi Road Sarbojanin Puja Samity, one of the oldest puja samity of the city– is celebrating its 75th year Platinum Jubilee of Durga Puja festival in a grand manner at Lodhi Colony, New Delhi. The celebrations will on until October 8, 2019. Festival was inaugurated by Secretary, Swami Shantatmananda Maharaj of Ramakrishna Mission New Delhi on October 3, 2019.
The Lodhi Road Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti this year has brought green revolution this Durga Puja. Promising to be one of crowd-puller pandals, the organisers have chosen environment protection as its theme this year.
The organizers’ supported by a team of NGT lawyers are distributing saplings and eco-friendly bags among pandal-hoppers during the four-day festival.
Swapan Dey, one of the organizers’ of puja pandal said, “The Lodhi Colony Durga Puja is one of the oldest Puja Pandals in State Capital. We are celebrating Durga Puja for 75 years. This is our platinum jubilee.”
This year keeping in mind environment protection, we have given ecological protection as puja theme.” Nishad further said, “The Lodhi Road Durga Puja is one of the oldest Puja Pandals in State Capital. Despite smaller in size, the salient features of pandal are that rituals are followed in true spirit. Elders claim that Lodhi Colony Durga Puja Samiti following rituals is mainly residents of area having faith on Devi Mandap which is adjacent to pandal.
This whole concept of Environment friendly Puja was implemented with the support of three NGT lawyers namely Mr. Vikram Singh, Mr. Suresh Sharma & Ms. Neha Gupta. “Keeping in mind derogation that we have done to our environment, we three colleagues has started our project to stop use of non biodegradable items and to use only those products which our earth naturally provides i.e. minimum usage of paper and use of robust alternates such as cloth bags, earthen glass/earthenwares, leaf plates or plates made from sugar cane, etc.” said Neha who has been fighting several matters in NGT for the safeguard of Environment.
“The paper is not the alternate to plastic as today we cannot exploit and cut trees due to massive destruction which has already taken place in the past. The only long term conducive approach is to substitute every product with something which is naturally available. Hence, we donated leaf bowl & biodegradable spoons and educated the management and stall owners on usage of leaf plates and cloth bags in one of the Puja Pandals at Lodhi Colony. The crusade has just started and it is our endeavour to educate people and the education has started from our home, by educating and providing alternate to our helpers at home, vegetable & fruitseller of our colony, newspaper guy, etc.” added Suresh Sharma.
Durga Puja at Lodhi Road always remains a special attraction for people close to art, as one will get lost in the beauty of the pandal /marquee made on different themes every year. It is an eye catcher puja of the city for innovative concept of celebration and unique style of pandals having largest footfalls. Speaking on the occasion Debashis Panja, General Secretary of Samity said, “This Puja started in 1945 at the same Park with the initiatives of some energetic, devoted and dedicated people of the locality. The Samity faced many ups and downs, but with the blessings of Maa Durga, we continued with our willful endeavor and today, we are celebrating our platinum jubilee.”
