Trump’s ‘New Map’ Sparks Outrage: Canada and Greenland Depicted as U.S. Territories

Trump has stirred fresh controversy with European allies after sharing an image on Truth Social showing Canada and Greenland coloured in US flag hues, reviving tensions over his push to acquire the Arctic island.

WASHINGTON — A diplomatic firestorm erupted on Tuesday after President Donald Trump shared a controversial map on Truth Social depicting Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela as United States territories, deepening rifts with key allies just as world leaders gather for the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The image, which appears to be AI-generated, displays the North American continent—including the sovereign nation of Canada and the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland—draped entirely in the stars and stripes of the U.S. flag. Another image shared by the President shows him alongside Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio planting an American flag in snowy terrain next to a sign reading: “Greenland, U.S. Territory, Est. 2026.”

The posts have fueled fears among Western allies that the administration’s “America First” doctrine is shifting toward an aggressive expansionist policy in the Western Hemisphere and the Arctic.

“National Security” Justification

President Trump, who is currently attending the Davos summit, defended the posts as a statement of “strategic necessity.” Speaking to reporters, he doubled down on his long-standing interest in acquiring Greenland, citing threats from Russia and China in the Arctic region.

“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” Trump reportedly said, brushing off the diplomatic outcry. “We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not. We’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”

The administration has already heightened tensions by threatening heavy tariffs on Denmark and other European nations if they refuse to negotiate the sale of the island—a proposal Copenhagen has repeatedly rejected as absurd.

Allies React with Fury

The inclusion of Canada in the “U.S. map” has drawn a sharp rebuke from Ottawa. Canadian officials, already navigating a tense trade relationship with the Trump White House, condemned the images as a violation of sovereignty.

In Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney—who defeated Justin Trudeau in last year’s election—is expected to address the controversy. Sources close to the PMO say Canada “will not be intimidated by social media provocations” and firmly rejects any suggestion of U.S. annexation.

European leaders have been equally vocal. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen vowed an “unflinching” response to what she termed bullying tactics. “Plunging us into a downward spiral would only aid the very adversaries we are both so committed to keeping out,” she warned in a speech Tuesday.

Venezuela Connection

The map also covered Venezuela, a detail that aligns with recent aggressive moves by the U.S. in South America. Following the U.S. operation earlier this month that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Trump has declared that the U.S. will “run” the country during a transition period.

The visual linking of Canada and Greenland—staunch NATO allies—with Venezuela, a country currently under direct U.S. intervention, has alarmed diplomatic experts.

“The Trumpian vision sees geographic proximity… as signs of weakness and sources of leverage,” said Michael Williams, a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, noting that the administration views traditional allies more as tributary states than partners.

Davos Showdown

The controversy sets the stage for a tense showdown in Switzerland. With President Trump scheduled to address the global elite on Wednesday, and meetings planned with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, the “new map” is likely to dominate discussions.

As of Tuesday night, the White House has not retracted the images, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that the administration is “considering all options” to secure American dominance in the hemisphere.
