NEW DELHI: A combative Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit back at PM Narendra Modi with a “karma awaits you” message a day after Modi referred to former PM Rajiv Gandhi as ‘Bhrashtachari No.1’ while campaigning in Pratapgarh, UP.
“Modiji, the battle is over. Your karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug,” the Congress president tweeted.
His sister and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also responded to the comment against her father. Modi’s jibe, she said, was delivered in a flurry of “belagaam sanak (uncontrolled eccentricity)” and was an “insult to the martyrdom” of the former PM.
“The PM, who seeks votes in the name of martyrs, insulted the martyrdom of a good and righteous man in a flurry of uncontrolled eccentricity,” she tweeted. “The people of Amethi, for whom Rajiv Gandhi laid his life, will give a fitting response. Yes, Modiji, this country never forgives cheaters,” she added.
At a rally in UP on Saturday, Modi had targeted the former PM while attacking Rahul. “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as Bhrashtachari No.1,” Modi had said. He also claimed that Rahul had admitted in an interview that his only aim was to tarnish the PM’s image. “By hurling abuses, you cannot turn the 50 long years of Modi’s tapasya (struggle) into dust,” the PM had said.
“By tarnishing my image and by making me look small, these people want to form an unstable and weak government in the country,” he had said. Modi’s comments, however, triggered outrage among Congress workers and leaders.
