Huge Crowd at Modi’s Thakurnagar rally, PM apologise for discomfort

Durgapur, West Bengal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised “for the discomfort that people went through” after several people were injured at the rally in Thakurnagar earlier today. “There was a lot of enthusiasm during my rally in Thakurnagar, and I think the ground was filled twice its capacity, I would like to apologise for the discomfort the people went through,” he said later in West Bengal’s Durgapur.

A stampede-like situation arose due to overcrowding at the venue grounds at the Thakurnagar rally. During the rally, Modi tried to calm the agitated crowd during the chaos, calling out several times to the audience to sit down during his speech.

The event was wrapped up soon in order to avoid further escalation of an impending stampede. However, several people were injured in the chaos that ensued at PM’s rally in Thakurnagar, which is close to Mamata Banerjee’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Several people were injured during the ordeal and PM Modi prematurely concluded the event. During the rally, he attacked Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress government for increasing violence in the state. He said the massive gathering at the rally is the reason ‘Didi’ – a moniker for CM Banerjee – is turning violent.
