After the tug of war, BJP and Shivsena seem to be inching towards an agreement. Sources said that a compromise formula for government formation is being worked out between the saffron allies.
Highly placed sources in BJP told the media that the BJP is willing to offer 14 cabinet berths to Shiv Sena, whereas the Shivsena is demanding 18. Sena is also demanding plum portfolios, even when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has firmly said he will not part with the important Home and Urban Development portfolios. However, the BJP is considering the proposal of giving away important portfolios like Revenue and Finance or Complete PWD to Shiv Sena. A section of senior leaders is, however, against giving away these portfolios.
BJP has also proposed that if the Sena wants they can appoint any of their leaders as the deputy chief minister. In 2014, when the Shiv Sena joined the Devendra Fadnavis Government, a formula of 26:13:04 was worked out, where BJP got 26 ministries, Sena thirteen and other allies got four cabinet berths. In the house of 288, Maharashtra can have 43 maximum possible ministers.
Shivsena has proposed a 21:18:04 formula, but the BJP is not willing to give that number of ministries. Talks between the Shivsena and BJP are on. Initially, a 1995 like formula was also proposed. In 1995, Shivsena got the Chief Ministers post, while BJP got Deputy Chief Minister’s post along with important portfolios like Home, Finance and PWD. The formula was trashed in the first rounds of talks itself.
